Today, I’d like to introduce you to a very informal business English- expression that we use quite often when we think we are treated unfairly.
It’s “screw someone over” and it means to “treat someone unfairly, cheat or swindle someone”.
For example:

Since our topic this week in our Fukuoka schools is fast food, I’ll introduce you to an informal expression we use quite usually at fast food restaurants. It’s “easy on the …” and it means “don’t take or use too much of something”.
For example:
“Easy on the mustard, please.” means “please don’t put too much mustard.”
“Easy on the cheese man!” means “please don’t eat too much of the cheese!”

Today’s expression is “Home is where the heart is” which can mean two things.
1: No matter where you are in the world, the place you that you feel the most attached to is the place in which you grew up or your family home.
2: No matter where you are from or happen to be, the place where you and family or the people you share your home with is where you feel at your happiest.
This expression came to mind to my the last time I was back in the UK, it felt very strange to feel out of place in my own country and feel glad to “ get back home” to my place in Nishijin! Wonder if it will happen this time too!

Today I’m going to introduce you to a Business English expression that is very important for us here in Kensington. It’s “cultural fit” and it’s a bit difficult to explain but it basically means that employees' beliefs and behaviors are in alignment with their employer's core values and company culture.
For example, when we started our school and were interviewing teachers we met a teacher that said that she didn’t want to work Mondays cause she liked long weekends. She was a lovely person but Jaimie and I at that time had one day off every two weeks (or more) so she obviously wasn’t the person we were looking for. She wasn’t a cultural fit.

We can ask about it with the following sentence,

And then we need to give the reason.
・The guests next door are very noisy.
・I think it hasn’t been cleaned properly.
・There is no hot water.
・The air conditioning doesn’t work.
・I’d like a room with a different view.
Finally we need to make sure of any extra payment.
Do I need to pay any extra fees?

Hi there, today isn’t so much travel English as some ways to talk about what happens to us in the summer heat, some of my students have been having trouble with it this week.
Firstly: 日焼け We have two ways to talk about this in English. When you are all red and peeling from the sun you are “sunburnt” but when your skin is nice and brown you are “suntanned”. In order to avoid sunburn you should use 日焼け止め which in English can be called suncream/ sunblock/ sunscreen etc. In this summer heat, if you don’t want to suffer from “ heatstroke” you should stay in the shade, and take plenty of fluids otherwise you may become “dehydrated” which can be very nasty indeed.

こんにちは、今日はそこまでトラベル英会話といった内容ではないのですが、この夏の暑さについて話しましょう。生徒さんの何人かは、今週この暑さによる何かしらのトラブルがあったようです。
まず始めに：日焼け
英語では2種類言い方があります。もしあなたの肌が全部真っ赤になって皮も剥けているような状態なら、“sunburnt” と言います。
ですが、肌は大丈夫で茶色く焼けている程度なら、“suntanned”と言います。
sunburnを避けるためには、日焼け止めを塗るべきです。日焼け止めは英語でsuncream/ sunblock/ sunscreenなど。
この夏、“熱中症”になりたくなければ日陰にいて十分に水分を摂ってください。
でなければ身体が“水分不足”になって大変なことになります。
