This weekend’s topic is cinema so here are some expressions we use when talking about a film’s success.
a box office hit= very successful in the cinema
“Titanic” was one of the biggest box office hits of the nineties.
a box office flop= unsuccessful at the cinema
Despite its huge budget, the film was a box office flop and left the production company with a massive deficit.
straight to dvd= not expected to be successful in cinemas and only released on dvd
The “ American Pie” franchise has now given up on cinema releases and just makes films that go straight to dvd.

a box office flop= ヒットしなかった映画
例）多大な予算にも関わらず、その映画はヒットせず、莫大な赤字が制作会社に降りかかった。
straight to dvd= ヒット作と予想されず、そのままDVD化
例）フランチャイズ社の「American Pie」は映画を出すことを諦め、そのままDVDにする映画を作成している。
