Hello there everyone, since we are using idioms this weekend, I’ll show you a couple of phrases you can use instead of saying I don’t have any ideas.

Nothing comes to mind/ I can’t come up with anything.

For example.

I can’t come up with anything good for my business blog this week.

“Any idea what we can do this weekend since the weather is going to be so bad?”

“ Nope, nothing comes to mind right now.”

This week we are going to talk about “Careers and Companies” and one of the focuses of our level 2 class is using the verb “find”. “Find” has some different meanings that the one we are going to focus on this week is “to think or feel a particular way about someone or something”.

ex. I don't find him an easy person to get on with.

ex. I find my work very stressful.

ex. I find living in the city so relaxing.

Hi there!

Today’s lovely business English expression is “ a wake up call” which you probably know from the hotel lessons we have but it has another meaning and that is to alert you to a situation that is not good, quite possibly something that you hadn’t noticed before then.

For example.

“The statistics we saw at today’s meeting should be a wake up call for all of us, we need to get things back on track!”

Sometimes, when I’m drinking in the city, people will try to strike up a conversation with me.There are lots more tourists in Fukuoka nowadays so the opportunity to meet foreigners is much greater than before Suddenly being asked where you are from can be a bit of a surprise so here are some things you could use to strike up a conversation with someone you are meeting for the first time.

  • Excuse me is anyone sitting here?

  • Do you mind if I join you?

  • What brought you to Japan? ( This sounds a little nicer than why did you come to Japan?)

  • How long have you been in Japan?

  • Are you here on holiday?

  • What do you think of it so far?

  • Have you been to Tokyo?

  • Have you tried sushi yet?

  • You should definitely go to Kyoto.

  • Nice meeting you, I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay.

日常英会話レッスン - I’m fine thank you and you! Long time no see.

Hello there everyone.

I often find that my students have some expression imprinted on their brains from school but don’t use them very naturally, two good examples of these are..

“I’m fine thank you, and you” and “Long time no see”

Both of these expressions are perfectly natural but people seem to want to fire them out at super high speeds making them sound unnatural and very practiced. We also have some alternatives so try to mix it up a bit please.

  • I’m good thanks, and you?

  • I’m pretty good thanks, yourself?

  • I’m fine thanks, how about you?

  • It’s been so long!

  • It’s been ages!

  • I haven’t seen you in so long!

  • It’s been a while!

Give those a try instead.

Hello,

“Must” is a modal verb with some different meanings. We are going to use it in our classes this week as in the following example.

Ex.

・I have never been to the Grand Canyon but I’d love to go. It must be so beautiful.　

In the sentence above “must” is used to show that something is very likely, probable, or certain to be true.

Other examples

・Jaimie’s been teaching all day - he must be tired.

・There aren’t any markers left - we must have used them all.

・When you got lost in the forest you must have been very frightened.

・"You must know Henry." "No, I don't."
