Today I’m going to introduce you to a few expressions you can use to ask a customer of yours to wait.

  • Wait. (Very Rude)

  • Please wait. (A little bit rude)

  • Can you wait. (A little rude)

  • Could you wait a little bit, please? (Polite)

  • Would you please wait for a little while, please? (Very polite)

Hi everyone,

Today I’d like to introduce you a very useful expression that we’ll be using in our “Talk about your city” classes in the level 2 and 3 classes. It’s “I find” and we use it to express our opinion on something we have experienced.

For example:

  • I find Tokyo very exciting!

  • I met Tomoko yesterday for the first time and I found her charming.

  • I find Margot Robbie to be incredibly attractive.

Please note that we can only use “I find” for things we have experienced, for example I can’t say “I find Canada to be very beautiful” if I have never been there.

Please use it in class!

トラベル英会話 - Youは何しに日本へ

Hello there!

As you may have noticed there is quite a large sporting event happening in Japan at the moment, and next year the Tokyo Olympics is being held too!

I’ve been here for a long time and I’ve been asked this question a thousand times..

  • “Why did you come to Japan?”

It is a little difficult to explain why but this question is a little direct and if you don’t know the Japanese it also can sound a little rude. Instead, why don’t you try this.

  • “What brought you to Japan?”

This is a bit softer and doesn’t sound quite so direct.

I’ve also been asked many times ..

  • “When are you going home?”

This one does bring a tear to my eye because it sounds like you want me to leave.

How about this instead...

  • “How long are you here for?”

Lastly, this is a bit too simple.

  • “ Do you like Japan?”

How about trying…

  • “Are you enjoying your stay so far?”

Give those a TRY! ( Rugby joke included, nice!)

私は長いことここに住んでいますので、何千回とこの質問をされました。

  • “なぜ日本に来たんですか？”

説明が少し難しいのですが、この質問は少しダイレクトすぎます。もしあなたが日本語を分からなかったらちょっと失礼に聞こえます。その代わりにこう言ってみてはいかがですか？

  • “何をしに日本にきましたか？”

この方が少し柔らかく、ダイレクトには聞こえません。

また、これもよく聞かれます。

  • “いつ帰るのですか？”

これは涙が出そうになります。私に帰ってほしいように聞こえるからです。

代わりにこれはどうですか？

  • “どれくらいここにいるのですか？”

最後に、これはシンプル過ぎます。

  • “日本は好きですか？”

これはどうですか？

  • “今のところ滞在を楽しんでますか？”

Hello there everyone, this expression is one that I have used many times since my beautiful but noisy children came into my life!

“drive me nuts”

This means that something irritates you to the point of going crazy.

Example

I can’t stand my kids watching “ Hikakin TV” while I’m trying to concentrate, it drives me nuts.

“Will you two stop fighting all the time! It’s driving me nuts.!”

As you know the consumption tax is going up in Japan starting tomorrow and this is how we express that in English.

Ex.1 The consumption tax is going up 2% to 10% from October.

Ex.2 The consumption tax is going to rise by 2% to 10% starting tomorrow.

Many times when we are travelling we would like our room to have a good view. Last year when I went to Kussharo in Hokkaido, we stayed at a beautiful hotel in a forest surrounded by nature, the hotel had very beautiful views of the forest from anywhere in the hotel except from our room unfortunately. Our room had a great view of the hotel parking and a few buses parked there. I was a little bit disappointed and asked reception if they could change our room. Here is how to do it in English.

  • Hello, would it be possible to change our room, please?

  • Our room doesn’t really have a good view.

  • We would like to have a better view of the forest if possible.

  • Are there any other rooms available?

Unfortunately, in our case there weren’t any other rooms available,

私たちは、旅行するときはいつも良い眺めの部屋に泊まりたいと思っています。去年北海道の屈斜路に行ったとき、自然に囲まれた森の中の美しいホテルに滞在しました。

Hello everyone,

One of the few things that I remember from my university classes is the business philosophy of “Grow or Die” which means that each company should target growth otherwise a new company is going to come, grow and take your market share resulting to your company’s “death”.

Actually it's a belief that has little basis in scientific research or in business reality but nevertheless since our school was founded we have been operating with that belief. At Kensington “grow” though doesn’t only mean expansion, we define it more as improvement or expansion.

Basically I believe that if Kensington doesn't continually grow or improve, at some certain point in time our lovely school is going to die.
