私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介 - いつもと違う体験

数年前、10年振りくらいに休暇でUKに戻りました。
私は家族に会うこと、そして奇妙なことにUKのソーセージ を食べれることにワクワクしていました。でも到着てみると、私の旅には、予想もしていなかった興味深いことがありました。自分の国に少し場違いな感じがしたのです。
最初は一度に全ての記憶が戻ってきて、景色や音、匂いまでもがある種の情報過多でした。その後、普段私が接していた人々に比ベると、皆が大きくて騒がしく、英語がとても上手だと感じ、自分のポケットの中に入っているお金の価値が全く分かりませんでした。
駅で切符を買おうとした時には、システムが変わっていて家族の一人に手伝ってもらい、イングランドの北部のレストランでは、アクセントが強すぎて話しかけられていることが分かりませんでした！
端的に言って、かなり自分が役立たずな気分になりました。
1週間ほど経つとそれも薄れて来て私のイギリス人らしさは少し戻って来ましたが、自分の国でまるで外国人かの様に感じたとても奇妙な経験でした。
少し長めの旅だったので、私は「家」である福岡に帰りたいと言う奇妙な感情も持ちました。
最近ではもう少し頻繁に帰国するので、もうあんな感覚になることは無いと思いますが、まったく独特な感情で、きっと忘れることはないでしょう。

An unusual experience
A few years ago, I went back to the UK on holiday and it was the first time I’d been there in ten years. I was excited, mostly about seeing family, and strangely about eating sausages, but when I got there I found there was something else very interesting about my journey that I hadn’t expected. I felt a bit out of place in my own country.
At first it was a kind of sensory overload of sights, sounds, and even smells, that brought back memories all at one time. Then I felt that people seemed huge and noisy compared to what I was used to, everyone’s English seemed so good, and I had no idea how much the money in my pocket was worth. I tried to buy tickets at the train station but the system had changed and one of my family had to step in to help me out and I couldn’t understand what people were saying to me in restaurants in northern England because the accent was so strong! In short, I felt pretty useless. After a week or so it wore off and I got my Britishness back a bit but it was a very strange experience feeling like a foreigner in your own country. The trip was slightly on the long side too and I also had the odd feeling of wanting to get back “home” to Fukuoka.
I go back a bit more often these days so I probably won’t feel that way again but it was definitely a unique feeling and something that I won’t forget.
