“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

These two phrases are used a lot in December! Everyone wishes each other well for the holiday period at the end of the year. In the UK, most people greet each other with “Merry Christmas” on Christmas Day. Even strangers passing in the street, or staff talking to customers in shops, will use this phrase. However, in America, did you know that most people don’t say this, and actually usually say “Happy Holidays”? You see, Christmas is a Christian holiday. However, America has a wide range of nationalities and religions - most US citizens aren’t Christian and don’t celebrate Christian traditions. Therefore, in the US and Canada, most people wish each other “Happy Holidays” - because this phrase is much more inclusive. It includes everyone, no matter what nationality or religion people are. Of course, it also includes all the people who don’t associate with any religion too. So, if you are spending any time over in the States at Christmas and New Year, remember to wish everyone “Happy Holidays!”

これらの2つのフレーズは12月にとても多く使われます！皆が年末にお互いに良い休暇を過ごせるように願うのです。イギリスではほとんどの人がクリスマス当日には「メリークリスマス」と挨拶し合います。知らない人達同士が道ですれ違う時や、お店のスタッフがお客様に対してでさえ、実際にこのフレーズを使います。

しかしながらアメリカでは、ほとんどの人がこのフレーズを言わず、実際には「ハッピーホリデー」と言うのを知っていますか？見ての通り、クリスマスとはキリスト教の祝日です。しかしアメリカには幅広い国籍と宗教が存在していて、多くの人々はキリスト教徒ではなく、キリスト教の伝統をお祝いしません。そのためアメリカやカナダでは多くの人々がお互いの「ハッピーホリデー」を願うのです。

このフレーズはより包括的で、国籍や宗教に関わらず全ての人々に使えます。もちろんどんな宗教にも属さない人も。

もしあなたがクリスマスや年越しをアメリカで過ごす時には皆の「ハッピーホリデー」を願うことを覚えておいて下さいね！

Hi everyone,

Christmas is approaching and I’m getting more and more excited with each passing day! I’m not sure why I love Christmas so much but it’s probably by far the most anticipated day of the year in the Mastoris household.

We have already decorated the house and decided my children’s presents. This year I’m thinking that I’ll finally tell my daughter that Santa doesn’t really exist and all those presents come from Daddy and Mummy although I’m pretty sure that she has already guessed as much.

Honestly speaking, I’m a little bit nervous about revealing it to her because as a rule, I try to never lie to my family ( or anyone else really), so it’s slightly hard for me to present this Santa story as anything else than lying. Well, I’ll let her know, and time will tell if making up all these stories about Santa coming in our house from the window to eat the cookies she made for him was worth betraying her trust in us.

やあ皆さん、

クリスマスが近づいて来ました、私は日を追うごとにどんどんワクワクして来ています！

なぜ私がこんなにもクリスマスが大好きなのかは私にもわからないのです、でもクリスマスはマストリス家にとって、1年の中でおそらくダントツに楽しみにされている日なのです。

私達はすでに家を飾り付け、子供達へのプレゼントを決めています。

ついに今年、私は娘にサンタは実際には存在せず、プレゼントは全てお父さんとお母さんから送られた事を伝えようと考えています。娘はすでにそう思っているとわかってはいますが。

正直にいうと彼女にこれを明かすことは少し心配なのです、なぜならルールとして、私は決して家族に嘘をつかないようにしているからです（実際には誰に対してもです）。だから私にとって、嘘をついた以外の何かとしてこのサンタの話を伝えるのは少し難しい事なのです。

そうですね、私は彼女に伝えようと思います。

サンタさんは娘が彼のために作ったクッキーを食べに窓からやって来るんだよ、という話は全て作り話だった事が、彼女の私達への信頼を裏切ることになるかどうかは、時が教えてくれるでしょう。

“To stick to something” means to do something that you promised or decided you would do, or that you believe you should do. It’s one of the expressions we’ll be using in the level 2 classes this weekend.

It’s common for many people to decide to go on a diet or start a new exercise regimen in the beginning of the new year but it’s also sadly very common for many not to stick to their diets or exercise regimens for long!

For me, as I’ve gotten older I’ve become better and better at sticking to what I’ve decided!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介 - ケンジントンの歴史

Hi there everyone,

To be honest this blog is a little difficult for me to write since I don’t really think I’m all that interesting so instead I’ll give you a little peek into the past and how Kensington came to be.

I got my first part time English job back in 2004 at a conversation based school in the city. I managed to get a good following of students and my classes increased but the school told me they would be given back to the Greek teacher who was there before me when he came back to Japan.

He came back, took back his classes, and I didn’t like it!

When we first met I thought he was a bit odd, kind of shy and a little difficult to talk to and I was right! After a while though I noticed that we had similar tastes, both had a dark sense of humor and loved to drink. This was more like it!

We continued to work there and drink every night after work and it was fun but the job was a grind and we eventually both quit.

After that, we would recommend each other to various employers as we continued to work in schools around the city and each job had its good and bad points, sometimes the bad heavily outweighing the good. I got myself a full-time position in 2008 and all was well with the world till the Lehman shock. I lost my job and couldn’t get another which was a little inconvenient since my son had just been born. I decided to start my own place and I came up with the genius idea of calling it “Jkaiwa!”. My Greek friend did the same and came up with a much better name for his school than mine “Windsor Eikaiwa”.

Ours schools were doing okay, but we lacked weekend students and that is how Kensington started, we joined forces and opened up Kensington. The first school was in a tiny apartment that I rented from a French friend of mine. We had to take down all the French posters and put up British stuff every weekend and then put it back, the space was tiny and we could hardly move around the table but it was fun!

We finally gained enough students to move out and that is when we got the place in Akasaka and we’ve been working hard at it ever since.

The Greek friend is of course Tim and it has been a weird journey for us from young heavy drinking Eikaiwa teachers, to older heavy drinking business partners and fathers. I have to say that even though I’m a hard worker, I’m kind of lazy in many ways and I don’t think I’d be doing this now if it wasn’t for him motivating me so losing those classes back in 2004 may not have been such a bad thing after all!

正直言うと、私は私自身をあまり面白いと思わないので、このテーマのブログを書くことは少し難しいのです。その代わり、少しだけ過去を覗いてどうやってケンジントンができたかを見てみましょう。

遡ること2004年、私は街の会話中心の英会話学校で初めての英語講師のアルバイトをしました。私は良い生徒さんを得ることができ、私のレッスンも増えて行きました。でもその学校は私にこう言ったのです。私の前にいたギリシャ人の講師が日本に戻って来たら、レッスンは彼に戻す、と。

彼が戻って来て、私はレッスンを返しました、本当は嫌でしたが！

初めて会った時、私は彼は少しシャイで、変わっていて話しにくいと思いました。そしてそれは間違いではありませんでした！

しばらくして、私たちには似ている部分があることに気付きました。二人共ダークなユーモアのセンスを持っていて、お酒を飲むのが好きでした。良かった！

私たちはそこで一緒に働き続け、仕事のあとは毎晩飲みに行きました。とても楽しかった、でも仕事は困難でついに2人とも仕事を辞めました。

その後、私たちは街中の学校で働きながら、色々な経営者にお互いを推薦しました。仕事にはそれぞれ良い点、悪い点がありましたが、時には良い点よりも悪い点ばかりなこともありました。

私は2008年に正社員のポジションになり、リーマンショックまでは全てが上手く行っていました。リーマンショックになり、私は職を失い、他の仕事を見つけられませんでした。都合の悪いことに、ちょうどその時、息子が生まれたばかりでした。

私は自分自身で学校を始めることを決断し、「J会話」と名付ける素晴らしいアイデアを思い付きました！私のギリシャ人の友人も同様で、彼はさらに良い「ウインザー英会話」という名前を思いつきました。

私たちの学校はそれぞれうまく行っていましたが、週末の生徒さんが不足していました、そしてここから、ケンジントン英会話の始まったのです。私たちは力を合わせてケンジントン英会話をオープンしました。最初の学校は私がフランス人の友人に借りた、小さなアパートメントの中にありました。私たちは毎週末、全てのフランス語のポスターを外し、イギリスのものに掛け替え、また元に戻さなければいけませんでした。そのスペースはテーブルの周りを動くのが難しいくらい狭かったですが、楽しかったです。

赤坂の教室を見つけた時には私たちには十分な生徒さんがいてついに引っ越しをしました。そしてそれからずっと、一生懸命働き続けています。

そのギリシャ人の友人とはもちろんティムのことで、若い大酒飲みの英会話講師時代から年を重ね、大酒飲みのビジネスパートナーであり、父でもある現在まで奇妙な旅を続けています。

私は働き者ですが、色々な意味で怠け者でだと言わざるを得ません。もし私をやる気にさせる彼がいなければ、つまり、2004年にあの授業を失っていなければ、今こうしていないだろうと思います。結局のところ、そんなに悪くなかったのかもしれません！

Hello again,

In my blog yesterday I mentioned making the most of the year. We use the phrase “make the most of it” when we are trying to make something good out of an unpleasant situation.

For Example

“How was your holiday in Scotland?”

“Well the weather was awful, it rained non stop! We met a lot of nice people on our travels though and even though we didn’t get much fishing done we were able to make the most of it.”

“How was school?”

“Awful, I have so much homework to do this term!”

“Well, you better make the most of it now because it’ll only get harder from now on. “

Hope that comes in handy.

例えば

  • Allow...authorize

To authorise is to allow or give permission to someone to do/use something.

The CEO has authorized the modification/change of our customer service staff outfit/uniforms.

Who authorizes the transfer of employees in your company?

Please add those two words to your Business English vocabulary bank and use them when needed.

In our everyday English blog today, let’s look at 2 fashion/beauty/appearance related idioms:

  • dressed to kill … When someone is dressed to kill, they’re wearing fashionable, glamorous clothes intended to attract attention.

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn't she?

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.

　　   Vertically challenged ...This is humoristic way to refer to someone who’s short. 

             A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can you give me a hand, Morinosuke.

             B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren't you?

Note: Please don't use it to refer to someone who is very short due to some medical condition. It may be offensive.

  • kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn't she?

    (昨晩のパーティーにモリ子はすごく着飾って来たでしょ？)

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.
    (うん、みんな彼女のゴージャスな服装に注目していたよ）kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

  • Vertically challenged …背が低い人のことを表すユーモラな表現。

 　　   A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can you give me a hand, 

　　Morinosuke.

  （一番上の棚のシャンプーのボトルに届かないんだ、もりのすけ、手伝ってくれる？)　　　B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren't you？

 （君はちょっと背が低いんだね）

This week our topic is ‘A Day Off’. In Japan, most people are off on national holidays, but some people have to work. And the same is true in England. In that case, in England, people will be given an extra paid day off that they can take later. This is called a day in lieu.

Here’s an example: ‘I worked the national holiday, so they gave me a day in lieu, which I’ll probably use next month.’

Hello guys!

I’d like to tell you a bit more about English history, and the role of French in our modern language. England and France have had a tumultuous relationship throughout history, some periods in history have seen French kings control England, and vice versa. The first time this happened, almost a millennium ago, it sparked a huge change in the English language. So much so that we have a name for the English at that time: ‘Middle English’. As modern speakers, we wouldn’t be able to understand most of it, as it was so different.

Not only is this - hopefully - interesting, it also helps to explain why English can seem so odd now. Things like why do we say ‘dogs’ with an ‘s’ but ‘fish’ without? Well, in these big moments in History there is a lot of change to the native language. Some words stay the same, some change, and some are newly introduced. It’s estimated that anywhere between 20-30% of English is borrowed from French, and there’s probably more ‘French’ words in use than ‘Old English’ words!

So if you’re confused about English, do what we do and blame the French! I’m kidding, of course. France, like many other places, has helped shape the language we speak today, and I think it’s all the better for it.

みなさんこんにちは！

英語の歴史と、現代の英語におけるフランス語の役割について少しお話したいと思います。イングランドとフランスは歴史の上でずっと波乱の関係でした。歴史上のある期間では、フランスの王がイングランドを支配していましたし、逆もまた同じでした。このような関係が始まったのはおよそ千年前、それは英語という言語に大きな変化を引き起こしました。当時それはとても大きな変化だったので、その英語には「ミドルイングリッシュ」という名前が付いています。それはとても難しいので、現代の英語を話す人々はその殆どを理解できません。

これらは、興味深い（といいのですが）だけではなく、なぜ英語が奇妙に思える事があるのかを説明する手助けにもなります。どうして「dogs」には「ｓ」を付けるのに「fish」には付けないのか？の様な。歴史上の大きな出来事の中で、元々あった言語には様々な変化がありました。変わらないもの、変化したもの、また新しく加わった言葉もあります。英語のうち、20-30％がフランス語から来ていると推測されており、おそらく「古い英語の単語」より「フランス語から来た単語」の方が多いでしょう。

だからもしあなたが英語について何か混乱してしまったなら、私達はフランス語を非難するでしょう！って、もちろんこれは冗談です。現在私達が話している言語は、フランスやその他の多くの場所で今も形作られていて、それは言語にとってかえって良いことだと思うのです。

Hey guys!

Here is a common idiom based on this week’s lesson: ‘Ok guys, let’s call it a day’. It basically means ‘let’s finish for the day’, and we say it now and then when wrapping up activities, or work.
