In our Biz speak today, here are two simple regular words we’ll turn into Business English:

  • create/make…..produce  

Our company produces electronics parts.

Brazil is the leading producer of coffee in the world.

  • Allow...authorize

To authorise is to allow or give permission to someone to do/use something.

The CEO has authorized the modification/change of our customer service staff outfit/uniforms.

Who authorizes the transfer of employees in your company?

Please add those two words to your Business English vocabulary bank and use them when needed.

  • Allow...authorize（承認する）

 authoriseとは誰かが何かをしたり、何かを使用することを許可する、承認する

という意味です。

（CEOは私達のカスタマーサービスの制服を変更することを承認しました。）

Who authorizes the transfer of employees in your company?
（あなたの会社では従業員の異動を承認するのは誰ですか？）

Hello there, how was your week at the workplace? Are you looking forward to the weekend?

In our everyday English blog today, let’s look at 2 fashion/beauty/appearance related idioms:

  • dressed to kill … When someone is dressed to kill, they’re wearing fashionable, glamorous clothes intended to attract attention.

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn't she?

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.

　　   Vertically challenged ...This is humoristic way to refer to someone who’s short. 

             A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can you give me a hand, Morinosuke.

             B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren't you?

Note: Please don't use it to refer to someone who is very short due to some medical condition. It may be offensive.

みなさんこんにちは、今週はお仕事どうでしたか？週末が待ち遠しいですか？

今日の日常英会話ブログでは、ファッション/美容/外見に関する2つのイディオムをご紹介します。

  • kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn't she?

    (昨晩のパーティーにモリ子はすごく着飾って来たでしょ？)

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.
    (うん、みんな彼女のゴージャスな服装に注目していたよ）kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

  • Vertically challenged …背が低い人のことを表すユーモラな表現。

 　　   A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can you give me a hand, 

　　Morinosuke.

  （一番上の棚のシャンプーのボトルに届かないんだ、もりのすけ、手伝ってくれる？)　　　B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren't you？

 （君はちょっと背が低いんだね）

注意：この表現は、病気の症状などによって身長が低い方には使わないで下さい。失礼になるかもしれません。

Hi there, TGIF! (Thank God It’s Friday!)

Any plans for the weekend? Are you planning to get out of town and enjoy the great outdoors somewhere?

In our everyday English blog we’re going to look at two expressions:

  • as big as all outdoors

This phrase means very large. 

A: Have you seen the CEO’s new yacht?

B: No, I haven't. What is it like?

A: It’s as big as all outdoors! 

  • get away from it all

It means to go to a different place usually far away from  your workplace, city or stressful environment. 

Ex. We love living in the city but sometimes we  need to get away from it all and go to the mountains and enjoy the great outdoors.

Ex. My idea of getting away from it all is going fishing with my son on the Hudson river.

週末は何か予定がありますか？

街を抜け出してどこか素晴らしい自然を楽しむ予定をたてましたか？

  • as big as all outdoors　「途方もなく大きい」

A: Have you seen the CEO’s new yacht? 　

　(CEOの新しいヨット見た？)

B: No, I haven't. What is it like?　

　(見てないよ、どんな感じなの？)

A: It’s as big as all outdoors! 

　(めちゃくちゃ大きいよ！)

  • get away from it all　「日常の煩わしさから逃れる」

Go to a different place usually far away from  your workplace, city or stressful environment.

　(職場や都会などのストレスがたまる場所から遠く離れて、どこか違う場所へ行こう。)

My idea of getting away from it all is going fishing with my son on the Hudson river.　

　(私の日常の煩わしさから逃れる方法は、息子と一緒にハドソン川で釣りをすることだ)

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介 - About my country

Hello everyone, are you having a good weekend?

Today I’m going to tell you a little about myself.

Henry Martin Kiryowa is my full name. My schoolmates used to call me “King Henry”.  I was born and raised in the suburbs of Kampala city north of Lake Victoria in a family of ten siblings. Lake Victoria is the second largest lake in the world.  I can't  swim and I don't like fishing, though.  ha ha ha. 

Any surprising facts about me?  I can’t think of much...uh  I speak five languages and I’ve lived about 80% of life outside my native country.(Do those count as surprising?  I’m not sure.)

Don't I miss my country? I terribly do! I especially miss my mom, siblings, the local food and the pleasant weather.

How have I been spending my free time lately? 

Reading books, doing a bit of vegetable growing in Chikushino city and researching environmentally friendly agriculture.

Did you ask me if I have a life motto?  

Today’s missteps and challenges make tomorrow a better day.

A bad day at work, home, on the sports field...is not a time to be depressed  but  an opportunity to be better at what you do. 

That’s it for today, friends. I’ll tell you more about myself, culture and country when another chance rolls around.

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介

みなさん、こんにちは。良い週末をお過ごしですか？

今日は私について、少しお話しようと思います。

ヘンリー　マーティン　キヨワ　が私のフルネームです。

学生時代の友達には、「ヘンリー王」と呼ばれていました。

私はヴィクトリア湖の北にあるカンパラのはずれで、10人兄弟/姉妹のなか生まれ育ちました。

ヴィクトリア湖は世界で２番目に大きな湖です。私は泳げませんし、釣りも好きではありませんけどね。ははは。

私についてのびっくりポイントですか？あまり思いつきません、あぁ、私は5か国語を話し、人生の80％程は母国の外で暮らしてきました。（この数字はびっくりでしょうか？わかりませんが）

母国を恋しく思うか？とても思います！特に母、兄弟/姉妹、地元の食べ物や気持ちの良い気候が恋しいです。

最近、時間がある時どのように過ごしているか？

本を読んだり、筑紫野市でちょっとした野菜栽培をしたり、環境に良い農業について調べたりしています。

人生のモットーはあるかって？

Today’s missteps and challenges make tomorrow a better day.＝今日の間違いと挑戦が、明日をより良いものにするのだ。

仕事や家、スポーツの競技場でうまくいかない日があっても、落ち込むべき時としてではなく、自分の取り組むことを上達させる機会ととらえるのです。

本日はここまでです。またの機会がめぐってきた時に、私のこと、文化や国についてもっとお話しますね。

Hello there, It’s Friday!  Any big plans for the weekend?

Not much for me. I’ll probably go grape picking in Asakura city, if the weather allows.

In our everyday English blog segment, we’ll  look at two expressions (idioms):

  1. hit the road  to leave a place or to start a journey/trip

  2. put up to stay for a short time(temporarily) in a home or accommodation like a hotel or hostel 

Junpei: Hey Morinosuke, I heard you’re going to Hawaii soon. When are   you hitting the road?

Morinosuke:  On Sunday afternoon. We’re going to put up at my girlfriend’s sister’s place on the first day and check into a hotel downtown the next /following day.

Junpei: Terrific! Have a great trip.

こんにちは、金曜日ですね！　週末は大きな予定がありますか？

私はそうでもないです。もし天気が良ければ、朝倉市ぶどう狩りに行くかもしれません。

日常英会話ブログでは、２つの表現（慣用句）をみていきます：

1.   hit the road :どこかを去る、または旅/旅行を始めるために出発すること

2.   put up : 短い期間（一時的に）家やホテル、ホステル等の宿泊施設に滞在すること

例：

ジュンペイ：やぁ、モリノスケ。もうすぐハワイに行くらしいね。いつ出発するんだい？

モリノスケ：日曜日の午後だよ。初日は彼女のお姉さんの家に泊まって、次の日に中心街のホテルにチェックインするよ。

ジュンペイ：いいね！よい旅を！
