中学１年生のための英語レッスンについて

私たちが常に行っていることの一つは、生徒さんのニーズに応えることです。

これは、とくに中学生の生徒さんによく行っています。

中学生は一般的に、とても早く興味が移り変わり、基礎的な学習をつづけるのに苦労しますが、ウィンザー英会話では彼らが学習できるように真剣に取り組んでおり、彼らの興味に基づいて私たちのオリジナル教材からレッスンを選んでいます。

ウィンザー英会話の講師デニーとその生徒さんとのレッスンに基づいて、レッスンで何が期待されるのか、どのようなアプローチをとるのか、どのようにレッスンを行うのかについてご紹介します。

レッスンで行うこと

その生徒さんのレッスンでは、初めの９〜１０か月の間は、たえずレッスンのレベルを変えつづけ、生徒さんのニーズに対応してきました。

はじめはフォニックスに取り組み、毎回レッスンのはじめにはスモールトークをします。

生徒さんにオープンクエスチョンで質問をし、それに答えられるように会話を導き、また生徒さんからも質問をするように促しました。(毎回レッスンの初めには少なくとも３つの質問することを課題としています。)

その後、ウィンザー英会話のオリジナル教材と生徒さんの興味を混ぜ合わせレッスンを進めました。

英検や他の英語試験の日程が近づきはじめたら、リーディング、ライティング、英語での面接に集中しました。

これはとても柔軟で精力的なレッスンなので、生徒さんは集中し続けることができます。

厳しいルールは特になく、生徒さんがただ最善を尽くしているだけです。

レッスンの目標

レッスンの目標は、生徒さんからリクエストされた内容に基づいています。

私の生徒さんの場合、英検の結果を改善したいと考えていて、またイギリスの友人と話すための英会話も学びたいと考えています。

レッスン内容は時間とともに、ニーズに応じてシフトしていきました。

まとめると、

  • レッスンの目標は、生徒さんのご要望に基づく (今回の場合は英検と日常会話)

  • レッスンの内容は、試験のタイミングに応じても変わる (自由なスタイルの英会話レッスンから、英検のロールプレイなどの英語テストに基づいたレッスンに移行することがよくあります。)

これまでの進捗状況

私の生徒さんは、以前はすこし恥ずかしがり屋で、英語で話すのをためらっていましたが、今では英会話を楽しんでいます。

もちろんまだすこし恥ずかしがり屋な面もありますが、「レッスンの初めに３つ以上の質問をする」という課題の通り、毎回レッスンの初めには質問をしますし、さらに単語の意味や発音の仕方についても率直に聞いてくれるようになりました。

彼は私のスピーキングを模倣できるようになってきているので、発音が劇的に向上しました。

私は一貫してレッスンプランを彼の興味や好きなこと（彼の場合は映画やマンガ）にシフトし続けているので、学校の授業中よりもはるかに積極的に英語を使っているでしょう。

それだけでなく、彼は学校ではルールが厳しいがゆえに質問がたくさんできませんが、レッスンではリラックスしたレッスンスタイルのおかげで多くの質問をすることができています。

彼の英語は大幅に改善しており、英検においては効果的に合格点を取得するために文章構成の仕方をレッスンで学んだので、ライティングスキルは特に向上しています。

ウィンザー英会話の講師は、生徒さんに対して柔軟であることが重要だと考えています。

そのため、要求されない限りは一つのトピックだけに極端に集中することはしません。

特に１０代の若者にとってこれは非常に重要であり、全体としてより良い学習環境につながり、日本の文部科学省が推進しているアクティブラーニングにもつながります。

English Classes for First Year Junior High School Students

At Windsor Eikaiwa, we have a variety of different lessons to choose from, whether it be in group lessons or private and in varying difficulties too.

One of the things that we always do however is cater to our student’s needs, and that’s exactly what we do very often with our Junior High School students.

Junior High School students are generally very quick on changing their interests and have a hard time getting engaged with the basic methods of study, but we work really hard here at Windsor Eikaiwa to keep them engaged and shift the lessons based on their interests and in line with our own curriculum. Below is an outline of what to expect and what kind of approach we do, based off a student of ours that works privately with one of our teachers, Denny, who will be describing the process of teaching with his student.

What we do in the Class

Over the course of 9-10 months of teaching, I’ve constantly shifted the level and adapted to my student’s needs. It started off initially as more tackling of phonics and teaching him to engage in a small talk conversation at the beginning of every lesson, asking him open ended questions and guiding him with the answers, encouraging questions (with some minor homework being asking me questions every lesson). From there I used many of Windsor Eikaiwa’s custom lessons and mixed it with my student’s interests, then shifted to focusing on writing, interviews and reading when dates for Eiken and other exams start to close in.

It’s been very flexible, dynamic and keeping my student on his toes. There are no strict rules, just that he does his best.

What our Target is

The target of the lesson is based off what the student had requested. In my student’s case, he wants to improve his results in the Eiken test, and also learn to speak with his friends in the UK. Therefore, the lesson has shifted over time depending on what his needs have been.

In summary:

  • The target of the lesson is based on what the student requires – in this case, Eiken and daily conversation.

  • The lesson shifts depending on timing of examinations and often goes from a freeflow style conversational lesson to a structured one based off Eiken roleplays and other tests.

Progress So Far

My student has gone from being somewhat shy and hesitant to speak to a much more fluid conversationalist. Of course he’s still a little shy, but he openly asks me what certain words mean and how to say them, as well as always asking me questions every lesson as his mini homework is to ask me 3 questions at minimum at the start of the class.

His pronunciation has improved dramatically as he has learned to “mimic” my speaking a little, and because I’m consistently shifting the lesson plan over to his interests (in his case, film and comics), he uses English much more actively than he would in school as it’s catered to what he enjoys in his personal time.

Not just that, but because of the relaxed lesson style, he is able to ask lots of questions he usually can’t in schools as the rules are far more rigid. He has overall seen a significant improvement, and his Eiken writing skills are going way up now as I’m teaching him how to structure paragraphs in English effectively to get a passing grade.

At Windsor Eikaiwa, it’s important for us to be very flexible with our students so there’s no intense focus on only one topic unless requested. For teenagers in particular this is very important, and it leads to a better learning environment overall and utilizes active learning, something the Ministry of Education in Japan is currently trying to encourage.
