ビジネス英会話 - 「rapport」の使い方

There are many ways to describe relationships in English, and most of them are fine to use in a business setting. For example ‘I get on well with Adam from accounting’ is fine to say.

However if you wanted a more formal expression, then rapport is a good word to remember. Here are some examples:

‘We need to build a good rapport with that company as they’re a big player in the market’

‘I hope we’ve built up a good enough rapport over the years so that I can be honest with you right now…’

As you might be able to tell, it’s a noun which basically means relationship. We use it alongside build up to make an expression, like the two examples I made.

基本的には「信頼関係」という意味居の名詞として使うことができ、例に挙げたように、「Built up」という表現と一緒に使います。

This week's topic is Relationships and we have a lot of expressions around describing relationships we have, so here are a few extra expressions to describe relationships that are just starting.

‘I went on a date last night and we hit it off.’

‘We have a new person in our department, we talked a bit but I don’t think we gelled.’

In the first example ‘hit it off’ means that I thought we connected in a positive way. In the second example it means the opposite; that we didn’t really connect in a meaningful way.

Both examples are basically the same and can be changed to negative or positive forms (we didn’t hit it off, we really gelled).

A ‘commercialised’ holiday.

Hey guys, here is a new verb for describing many mainstream holidays nowadays: ‘commercialise’. It means to exploit something for profit. Valentines Day originally had nothing to do with love, and it was never a traditional holiday in terms of buying things until it was heavily commercialised by big retailers.

‘Commercialise’ isn’t just for holidays, you can use it anywhere it makes sense. Here is another example.

“People are loving this new character in our movie”

“They sure are, let’s talk to marketing and start getting this thing commercialised.”

‘commercialised’

これは、利益を得るために何かを利用する事を意味します。

本来、バレンタインデーは愛があれば、やらなくてはいけないことなど何も無かったのです。そして大企業がひどく商業化するまでは、祝日やお祝いイベントに物を買うような習慣は決してなかったのです。

この表現は、祝日にだけ向けた言葉ではありません。どこにいてもあなたはこの表現を使うことができるでしょう。

別の例を挙げてみます。

“People are loving this new character in our movie”

（人々は私達の映画に出てくる、この新しいキャラクターを好きになるでしょうね）

“They sure are, let’s talk to marketing and start getting this thing commercialised.”

（その通りですね。マーケティングについて話してｍ、商品化を進めて行きましょう）

'Will you be my valentine?' This special holiday has a special way to ask someone out for a date: ‘Will you be my Valentine?’. It’s kind of an older thing to say though, so if you ever want to ask someone out on a date in English, it's best to say something like: ‘Would you like to go for a drink sometime?’ or ‘Can I take you out for dinner this weekend?’.

This week’s topic will explain levels of interest in English (e.g. keen on, like, love), here is an idiom that can work in tandem with those.

It means to try to learn or find out something in a tentative or quiet way, e.g. ‘We need someone to replace Julie in HR, put the feelers out and let’s see who’s available’.

It’s an idiom that I heard a lot back in England, I encourage you to give it a try as it’s quite a natural phrase.

Hey guys,

I wanted to write about an interesting part of the history of the English language. The sounds we make for letters have changed over time(as it is changing now). This means that many words share an unclear historical connection.

A good example is the English 't' sound (bite, tonight), as it used to be a 'd' sound (ride, dog). So the word 'ten' used to be 'decem' for the Romans. And that's the meaning behind the word 'December', which means the 'tenth month'. Now, you might be thinking “December isn’t the tenth month you dummy!” But for the Romans, it originally was, they didn't bother counting winter months as there were no crops to keep track of.

So the words 'Ten' and 'December' are descendants of the same word, and that's true for most words in most languages. I think that's really interesting, and I hope you do, too!

今日は英語という言語の興味深い部分について書きたいと思います。文字の発音は時間と共に変化しています（今も変化し続けています）。これは、多くの単語が曖昧な歴史と繋がっている事を意味します。

良い例として、英語の「 t 」の音（ biteやtonight など）があります。これはかつて「 d 」の音（ rideやdogなど ）として使われていました。かつてローマ人は「 decem (ラテン語の10という意味)」を「ten 」という単語として使っていました。そしてこれによると、「 December 」という単語は裏側で「10個目の月」を意味しています。今あなたは、「12月は10個目の月ではないよ、おバカさん！」と思ったかもしれません。でもローマ人は本来、注意しておくべき作物がない冬の時期はわざわざ月をカウントしなかったのです。

その為、「 ten 」と「 December 」は同じ単語から生まれた子孫であり、実際に多くの言語の中の沢山の単語も同様です。私はこれは本当に面白い事だと思いますし、皆さんもそう思ってくれたらいいなと思います！

This week our topic is ‘A Day Off’. In Japan, most people are off on national holidays, but some people have to work. And the same is true in England. In that case, in England, people will be given an extra paid day off that they can take later. This is called a day in lieu.

Here’s an example: ‘I worked the national holiday, so they gave me a day in lieu, which I’ll probably use next month.’

Hello guys!

I’d like to tell you a bit more about English history, and the role of French in our modern language. England and France have had a tumultuous relationship throughout history, some periods in history have seen French kings control England, and vice versa. The first time this happened, almost a millennium ago, it sparked a huge change in the English language. So much so that we have a name for the English at that time: ‘Middle English’. As modern speakers, we wouldn’t be able to understand most of it, as it was so different.

Not only is this - hopefully - interesting, it also helps to explain why English can seem so odd now. Things like why do we say ‘dogs’ with an ‘s’ but ‘fish’ without? Well, in these big moments in History there is a lot of change to the native language. Some words stay the same, some change, and some are newly introduced. It’s estimated that anywhere between 20-30% of English is borrowed from French, and there’s probably more ‘French’ words in use than ‘Old English’ words!

So if you’re confused about English, do what we do and blame the French! I’m kidding, of course. France, like many other places, has helped shape the language we speak today, and I think it’s all the better for it.

英語の歴史と、現代の英語におけるフランス語の役割について少しお話したいと思います。イングランドとフランスは歴史の上でずっと波乱の関係でした。歴史上のある期間では、フランスの王がイングランドを支配していましたし、逆もまた同じでした。このような関係が始まったのはおよそ千年前、それは英語という言語に大きな変化を引き起こしました。当時それはとても大きな変化だったので、その英語には「ミドルイングリッシュ」という名前が付いています。それはとても難しいので、現代の英語を話す人々はその殆どを理解できません。

これらは、興味深い（といいのですが）だけではなく、なぜ英語が奇妙に思える事があるのかを説明する手助けにもなります。どうして「dogs」には「ｓ」を付けるのに「fish」には付けないのか？の様な。歴史上の大きな出来事の中で、元々あった言語には様々な変化がありました。変わらないもの、変化したもの、また新しく加わった言葉もあります。英語のうち、20-30％がフランス語から来ていると推測されており、おそらく「古い英語の単語」より「フランス語から来た単語」の方が多いでしょう。

だからもしあなたが英語について何か混乱してしまったなら、私達はフランス語を非難するでしょう！って、もちろんこれは冗談です。現在私達が話している言語は、フランスやその他の多くの場所で今も形作られていて、それは言語にとってかえって良いことだと思うのです。

‘You’re hired’ is an expression you might have heard in English movies or TV shows, when

someone is given a new job. But in reality, when businesses want to hire a new employee,

they will instead make an ‘offer’ to them:

‘we enjoyed meeting you yesterday, we’d like to formally offer you the position you applied

for’

‘We were impressed with both your CV and interview, and we want to offer you the position

of Sales Director’

These are usually written within a formal job offer email, or sometimes is said over the

phone(followed up with a formal letter), and then the candidate can choose to accept,

negotiate or decline the offer.

You’re hired!＝「採用だ！」は、海外の映画やテレビ番組で登場人物が新しい職を得た場面等で、みなさんが耳にしたことがあるかもしれない表現です。しかし現実では、事業者が新たな従業員を雇う時、彼らに対して‘offer’＝「オファー、提案、申し出」をするのです。

「昨日はお会いできてよかったです。あなたが応募した役職を、正式にオファーしたいのですが。」

「あなたの履歴書と面接、どちらも素晴らしいと思いましたので、セールスディレクターの役職をオファーしたいと思います。」

それらは通常、正式な採用通知e-mailに書かれるか、（正式な手紙の補助要素としての）電話での会話で用いられます。そして候補者はそのオファーを受けるか、条件の交渉をするか、オファーを断るかを選ぶことができるのです。
